Astonished Legends of Indian Football | No : 09 | Subimal Chuni Goswami


Subimal Chuni Goswami was a multi talented sports icon of India. He was the one of the reknowned Indian football legend as well as he was a first class cricketer, Hockey Co-ordinator, Tennis star, Movie actor and So on.
Chuni Goswami was born in Kishoreganj of Bengal, today's Bangladesh, on 1938. He learned his basic football lessons from his first trainer Shibdas Banarjee and joined in Mohun Bagan's junior team and later step's into the Senior team of Mohun Bagan.He got the offer's from the English Premier League Tycoons, Totenham Hotspurs. but refused the offers and played for Mohun Bagan till his career lasts. He wear captains armband of Mohun Bagan for five consecutive seasons as well.




In 1956, Chuni Goswami was started his international carrier against the chinese Olympic team and in that match Blue Tigers crushed the chinese team by 1:0 Score line. He wore the Indian jersey for about fifty matches including Olympics, Asian Games, Asia Cup and Merdeka Cup. India won the Asian games gold medal in 1962 and Silver medal in the Asia Cup in  1964 are comes under this Bengal Tigers Captaincy. He scores 11 goals for team India 43 matches.




Chuni Goswami made his signature in Cricket also. He represent Bengal team in Renji Trophy and performed a magnificiant Career in first class cricket. He score 1592 runs including a ton and took 47 wickets from 46 first class matches.




From 1986 to 1989 he served as the Director of Tata Football Academy. and 1991 he served as Indian National team Coach. He was honoured with many awards. In 1962, He recieves the Best striker of Asia Award, In 1963 he recieves Arjuna Award and in 1983, he recieves the Padma Shri Award. In 2005, Mohun Bagan honoured their trustworthy striker with Mohun Bagan Ratna.
