Kerala Blasters FC start their Durand Cup'21 campaign with a win against Indian Navy Football Team
KOLKATA, September 11, 2021: Indian Super League (ISL) side Kerala Blasters marked their Durand Cup debut with a slender 1-0 victory over the Indian Navy Football Team at the Vivekananda Yuba BharatiKrirangan (VYBK) on Saturday, September 11.
Uruguayan midfielder Adrian Luna
scored the match-winning spot-kick in the 72nd minute.
Scores remained level at half-time
and given how wasteful both teams were on either half, it seemed that the 130th
Durand Cup was heading for its first goalless draw.
The Navy team did an incredible job
in their opening game when they came back from a goal down to win against Delhi
FC and had they only tucked away the biggest chance they had today in the 74th
minute, the Sailormen could have ensured
passage to the quarter-finals already.
The opportunity was textbook and it
sprung out of a Navy counterattack. Ultimately, it was squandered, not once but
twice. First, Sreyas VG had to put his shot away with only Albino Gomes to
beat, but the Blasters custodian palmed it away.
Only for the ricochet to fall straight
at the feet of P M Britto, who had an open goal to aim for. The former East
Bengal winger, however, he astonishingly
shot wide.
The breakthrough goal had arrived two
minutes earlier, following an erratic
challenge inside the box by Navy’s Dalraj Singh, which was adjudged to be
yellow-card worthy and a penalty was awarded in favour of Kerala.
Adrian Luna stepped up for the
responsibility and made no mistake in making it 1-0 for his side.
“We are happy with the three points.
It was our idea of today’s game. It was really hard in these circumstances with
the rain and the condition of the pitch. We wanted to finish the game without injuries
but now we have to see how to recover some of our players”, said Kerala
Blasters Head Coach Ivan Vukomanovićfollowing the
game.

130th Edition of the Iconic Durand Cup Football tournament to set the tone for a brand new season of Indian football.
Kolkata, Monday, August 23, 2021: Five Indian Super League (ISL) franchises and three I-League teams will be among 16-teams vying for the iconic Durand Cup Football Tournament, to be played in and around Kolkata between September 5-October 3, 2021. The tournament, now in its 130th edition was first held in the Mecca of Indian football back in 2019, after moving from its long time venue at Delhi.
Traditionally organized by the Indian Army on behalf of our Armed Forces, the World’s third oldest and Asia’s oldest football tournament will this year also see the Government of West Bengal as joint hosts, who have been providing admirable support in all aspects of organization.
Besides top ISL franchises FC Goa and Bengaluru FC, the other clubs from India’s top division would be Kerala Blasters, Jamshedpur FC and Hyderabad FC.
Challenging them would be the century old Mohammedan Sporting of Kolkata, who were the first Indian winners of the Cup in 1940 and who would be leading a troika of I-League challengers including defending champions Gokulam Kerala and Sudeva FC of Delhi.
FC Bengaluru United and Delhi FC will represent the second division of Indian football whereas two Indian Army teams (Red and Green), a team from Indian Air Force and Indian Navy, CRPF and the Assam Rifles round-off the 16.
Three leading footballing venues of the State have been identified for the 130th Durand Cup, namely the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) and the Mohun Bagan Club Ground in Kolkata as well as the Kalyani Municipal Stadium Ground, which has been regularly hosting national level football matches over the past few years.
The Durand Cup is unique in the sense the winners are awarded three trophies with two rolling ones (the Durand Cup and the Shimla Trophy) and the President’s Cup for permanent keeping.
About Durand Cup
A symbol of India’s football history and culture, the Durand Cup is Asia’s oldest and the world’s third oldest football tournament, held between 16 top Indian football clubs across divisions. Organized by the Indian Armed Forces, the Durand Cup has been the breeding ground for India’s best footballing talent, over the years.
The inaugural edition happened in Shimla in 1888, when it started off as an Army Cup, open only to the British Indian Army troops in India, but soon opened up to civilian teams. Named after its founder, Sir Mortimer Durand, Foreign Secretary of British India from 1884 to 1894, the iconic tournament reached its 130th edition in 2021. Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have been the most successful teams, winning the tournament 16 times each.
